This is one of those recipes that barely feels like a recipe because there are just 4 ingredients and there is hardly any cooking at all really. As simple and quick as this little gem is though - it works (and it's awful). Unlike most of my recipes my goal here isn't taste or even straight up health, this recipe is all about calming the sore throat and easing annoying coughs without turning to chemicals. Medicine has a time and a place for sure, but the average cough isn't it.
12 cloves garlic, peeled and lightly crushed
3/4 cup honey
3 tbsp brandy
1 tbsp lemon juice
In a small saucepan, mix up the garlic and honey. Mash the garlic a bit more with a wooden spoon to get all the garlicy godness out of it.
Cook it for about 15 minutes, then add the brandy and lemon juice. Truth be told, I didn't put any brandy in mine because I wanted to be able to give it to the kids too!
Mix, mix, mix - then let it cool off.
Now strain the liquid into a mason jar and leave all the chunky goo out. I mashed mine even more with the back of a spoon.
There will be a lot of leftover goo.
It only makes about a cup of cough syrup, but you need just a tablespoon or so to chase a cough or sore throat away. Watch out though, it's as gross as you'd think it is.
