Generally speaking, ketchup is king with little kids. I know a few littles that don't like it at all (aliens, obviously) but as a rule, kids and ketchup are a great pair. I have seen a lot of parents (among other family members) make a meal and present it to a child and be horrified or disappointed when they ask for ketchup. As if it is so offensive to them that a 4 year old wants to drown the pot roast they worked on all day in tomatoes and sugar. (read)
A couple of years ago, I set out to cook and bake my way through Jessica Seinfield’s book, Deceptively Delicious. I did manage to cover a lot of the book, but I didn't do every recipe. I brought it with me to LA though, and I'm still working through it! (read)
I use the term 'skinny' pretty loosely here, because duh if you eat enough of pretty much anything there's nothing skinny about it. It should also go without saying that swapping out crackers or flatbread for veggies to dip in this will also totally change what kind of day you have.
It's at least fair to call it a light dip because if you'd normally be snacking on chips or crackers this dip is a step up with a lot less fat and calories and a little boost of veggies! (read)
Ok, so moving along. No, these do not taste just like a goldfish cracker, because vegan cheese doesn't taste like cheese. But that doesn't mean they aren't amazing! I love these! I love them with soup or alone or dipped in whatever I'm dipping veggies in at any given moment. (read)
For a few years now I've been getting a lot of my basic information about the foods I eat from The World's Healthiest Foods, and then I generally do more research on whatever food I looked up and pull it all together for a better understanding of what I'm eating. I figured since I refer back to this site so often, I will try to blog through the list. The website actually lists 127 foods, I omitted the animal products from the list (meat, dairy & seafood), which leaves us with vegetables, fruits, beans & legumes, nuts, seeds & oils, grains, spices & herbs, natural sweeteners & drinks. Generally, a bowl of strawberries doesn’t need any dressing up around here. All of the kids will devour a bowl without any sugar on them, without them being dipped in chocolate (though that never hurts, especially if it’s dark chocolate). Sometimes, though, I feel like a little something and these little somethings are just the thing. No dairy, just a little hit of sugar and a tofu punch at the same time! Totally impossible to eat just one. (read)
Vegan picnic inspiration, courtesy of Mama Pea. I haven't coughed up any recipes from this book yet because I really think it's worth picking up - but Mama Pea gives you this recipe on her blog. (read)
What I love about this dip is it works just as well as a base for an oatmeal parfait concoction - which we have used the second half for every time I've made it so far. Wee One #3 basically eats it like pudding, not so patiently dealing with the bits of oatmeal and flax and berries in her way. It's a rough life, right? (read)
I am a little in love ok, I'm a little totally obsessed with ZuzanaBodyrock in general. My friend Gill got me into the site and between the two of them (Gill & the site) I'm in much better shape than I maybe ever have been. These workouts and this site in general are not for the faint of heart - I mean that both literally and figuratively. The workouts are intense and they're HARD, most importantly there are different workouts up all the time, so your body never gets a chance to get used to what you're doing. And the videos? They're so hot they're borderline porn. I mean that in the best possible way. Go ahead, go watch one. I'll wait for you here. (read).
I made these three dips to go with the tofu nuggets when four of my girlfriends came up to visit. Of the three of us that are down with tofu, we polished off the plate and sought out more things to dip! We also each had a different favorite. I loved the homemade barbecue sauce the most, I swear it tastes like the stuff in the bottle we used to buy but it's honestly better. Talea liked the lime thaini best and Gill favored the Cinnamon Vinaigrette. That worked out well since we each wanted to hoard our own dip anyway.

Oh hummus. Oh flatbread. Two mostly healthy things I wont stuff my face with - separately. If they are served together, I cannot be held responsible for how much of this stuff I put away. Om nom nom. I mean, I'll dip a few carrot sticks in a bowl of hummus, sure. And yeah, I'll wrap up some kind of tofu and veg and fake cheese situation in a warm flatbread and munch away. But I will not return to the buffet for either of those treats. So, as you'll note from my creative background choice in one recipe and then, well, not in the other - I made these on separate occasions. (read).
This snack is especially handy when people show up unexpected for movie night, or when you're poking around the kitchen in the middle of the night when you should be in bed. (read).
